  • Blairstown Dog Park has been APPROVED! The town has donated land behind the municipal building but we must raise approx $25,000.00 to buy/install a fence, seating, walkway and various other items.

  • Merry Chrismas to my distant LANCE family
The LANCE family came to Blairstown and Walnut Valley October 1780 when John Lance, son of Anthony and Mary Lance came to live in this beautiful valley.

I've traced the family for many years and although still very much on the hunt for my Lance relatives, I wanted to take a moment and which all those so far away and those passed on a Merry Christmas and the best of New Years.

  • BES criteria for school closings/delays
This morning we were hit with another freak snowstorm, the roads are unplowed/untreated, and according to all who have ventured out to work, etc. the conditions are VERY treacherous. Yet school is open and the buses are running.

I'd like to know how exactly such decisions are made and by whom. Is there no feedback loop wherein those who actually make it to school under such conditions report to those who make these decisions? Do the 'decision-makers' not travel the roads themselves and try to imagine children and bus drivers doing same?

    Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

  • Non-Point Source Pollution
    Non Point Source Pollution
    By Claire McNulty, 13
    Ridge and Valley Charter School

Many people talk about pollution as though it's an issue that's in a far away land, a third world place, but actually, it's happening right here in Blairstown, New Jersey. Non Point Source Pollution (NPSP) contaminates our waterways, oceans, and drinking water. NPSP happens when animal manure, automobile gas, human sewage, pesticides, and numerous other everyday household products and chemicals flow into storm drains that lead to the streams, rivers, and ground water. This is happening right here in Blairstown. Our precious drinking water might be infected with things you do not want to be ingesting and poisoning people of all ages, especially kids. Contamination does not only mean human contamination, NPSP also happens without human intervention like rotting corpses of animals that end up contaminating the water.
Not only does this pollution affect our clean water, it is endangering and killing aquatic life all over the country. Frogs and other amphibians are extremely susceptible to basically any kind of pollution which is why a lot of species are extinct. My school (Ridge and Valley Charter School) has raised trout from eggs as part of the Pequest Trout in The Classroom model in a controlled tank environment and released them into the Paulinskill River which has helped our ecosystem in downtown Blairstown.
Unfortunately, human behavior is a major source of water pollution that could be prevented. This is why we have the New Jersey Water Ambassador Program. The Water Ambassadors of our area spend every day educating our community about things like this. Want to help our community? Volunteer to asses your local waterways. The NJ Watershed Ambassador Program is a community-oriented program that helps to keep water throughout the country clean by educating citizens about NPSP. If you'd like to learn more about this, go to ww.nj.gov/dep/wms. Maybe this little excerpt helps you realize how important this issue is and our community will benefit from your actions. Thank you!
  • Hello Blairstown! My name is Shanna and I am a professional career nanny. I live right in Hackettstown. I have over 15 years of childcare experience with children ranging from newborn through teenage years. I have been out of work for quite some time now and am seeking to network in any way that I can. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a nanny, please feel free to contact me. Ideally, I am in search of a full-time, long-term, live-out employment opportunity with a family that I can grow to become a part of and love. I do have a personal write-up and bio I make available upon request. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
    Sincerely, Shanna

  • Dog Park
I am a Blairstown resident dog owner and know of many people who like to go to the Sussex Co. Dogpark (in Wantage) with their dogs. I think that this area would really love such a dogpark. Does anyone know how to get this started? I am interested in starting up a committee or group to look into a Blairstown area dogpark! If this is something you're also interested in- send me an email at simonr23@gmail.com. Thanks!!
  • BUS DRIVERS AND CELL PHONES
Why are Blairstown Bus drivers allowed on their cell phones when they have a bus load of students!? I just moved back to Blairstown a month ago and have encountered more problems with getting this issue resolved. This is a danger to not only the children , but to other drivers.STOCKER BUS COMPANY IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!. The rudest people I have ever come across. My child was not dropped off, then almost missed three times in the month we have been here. She is on the phone everytime she drops him off...the bus company says her phone is off and in her purse and that i am not telling the truth ....but being that i know what i have seen and my child has knowledge of what a cellphone is, i invited them out to take a look...but they declined...I am filing a Police Report, Bright and Early Monday Morning!
SHAME ON YOU STOCKER BUS COMPANY AND BLAIRSTOWN ELEMENTARY FOR IGNORING THIS PROBLEM!!
  • HEY BLAIRSTOWN
Hey blairstown Residents! We should start a chat going like on the Hackettstown forum as well as NJ.com.
  • I like the idea (posting) of starting a dog park here in Blairstown, as a lot of towns now have them. The problem is big cost = fence, water supply, and possible lighting if used after dusk. Most of Blairstown Twp. floods - Footbridge Park is a prime example of that, always muddy and buggy. A great spot would be the old farm next to First Hope Bank on Route 94. The town owns the property I think, purchased with our local Open Space tax dollars a few years ago. The area is an eyesore anyway so why not look into this location? I would be willing to help if other would care to join me and talk to the powers that be. Remember that we are in a recession and local dollars are hard to come by these days. It's unfair to ask residents for tax dollars but maybe we dog owners could raise the money if the town gives us some land to use??? Brian Keith of Blairstown
  • Child Care
Just wanted to put the word out that the daycare center in town has just moved to 13 Stillwater Road. I stopped in the other day and was overwhelmed by the amount of classroom space they now have. The new location is far better than the previous, which was the Fountain Mall. This place is clean, comfortable and they do not share the property with any other businesses. It is just down the road from the elementary school. Their grand opening is this Saturday, 5/15 from 11-2PM. You should stop by and see the new center.
  • HEADLIGHTS WHEN IT RAINS
I would very much like to see our police/state police pull the offenders over with a warning about the law of running your headlights when it is precipitating and between its starting and stopping It makes sense to want to be seen and observe the law as well.
  • Re: Bus Drivers on Cell Phones
It would be good if people would take pictures of this, because they couldn't refute those! Good luck, because I agree...our kids are precious and don't need a bus driver who does that.
